Off Chances is next Tuesday, get ready. We’ve imported our favorite ex-Chicagoan, DJ Total Freedom, all the way from the west coast for you . Better pack some kneepads, this may get rowdy.
Our friends at FKA (the world-famous trans-friendly party first Thursdays at Big Chicks) posted this notice after last month’s event, regarding an assault on a trans person. We at Chances urge everyone in the queer community to educate themselves on trans rights and issues and work towards the eradication of transphobia. Please contact one of the organizers at any Chances event if you feel that trans rights or safety are in danger.

We wish we only had to have light-hearted postings but serious things happen that not only hurt our community, but are entirely unacceptable.
We were notified that a trans woman was verbally and physically assaulted outside of Big Chicks at last month’s FKA, by a person believed to be from within the LGBTQ community. As the organizers of FKA, we are disappointed and angered by an incident of such hate and ignorance. While there is no easy solution to instantly prevent such crimes from happening, we are currently working to explore ways to not only improve visibility of our trans-inclusive mission, but clarify that we intend for our space to invite a FULL RANGE of genders/expressions/sexualities/etc. Any behavior or attitude short of respectful and welcoming will not be tolerated.
In addition, please look out for one another and let one of the Big Chicks’ staff members know if you sense someone is being disparaged, or feel mistreated yourself. We need to, however unfortunate, recognize that a larger issue of violence and marginalization still exists within our queer bubble. We hope that collectively, we can address and respond to these hateful incidents and work towards finding ourselves part of a stronger, safer community.

The lovely ladies from the Chicago Dyke March will also be present. We hope to see you there, too!
